This series resulted from a residency at Kala Art Institute after I was chosen as Artist of the Year. I had not yet made my collages and paintings and was at a loss for two dimensional material to work with. I decided to photograph the fresh grind marks on metal sculptures before the patina is applied. Those marks had always reminded me of the crosshatching in old etchings. The photos were manipulated on the computer and large prints were made with evocative colors and textures. They didn’t interest me sufficiently so I put them away for a couple of years. After coming across them again, I decided to disassemble the images and combine them with dimensional steel and glass to make a kind of print/relief. The mix of two and three dimensions creates a fresh, new approach to art making.
